Kate Reed Nature Recreation Area
About this ride
Kate Reed Nature Recreation Area, on the southern outskirts of Launceston, Tasmania, is a popular local mountain biking destination offering around 15 km of tracks and trails through approximately 120 hectares of native bushland. The network is known for its narrow, tight and twisty singletrack, small hills, short punchy climbs and fun descents, with around 6 km designated as mountain-bike-preferred trail. The relatively approachable terrain makes Kate Reed particularly good for beginners, families and XC riders, while more experienced mountain bikers can still find plenty of features and fast, flowing sections to keep things interesting. Just around 10 minutes from Launceston’s CBD, it’s an easy option for a quick MTB session or a few hours exploring Tasmania’s northern trail network. The reserve is also used for walking, running and orienteering, while the Launceston Mountain Bike Club regularly uses and helps maintain the MTB trails. Access is available via the Silverdome complex on Oakden Road or from the Kings Meadows connector near the Midland Highway, although parking and access conditions vary between entrances. RTS Tip: Kate Reed is a great choice if you’re newer to mountain biking or want a fun XC ride without committing to a huge trail network. After periods of heavy rain, give the singletrack time to dry — the local trail crew specifically asks riders to stay off wet trails to prevent damage. If parking at the Silverdome, also be aware that its access gate is locked outside business hours.
