About this ride

Rising directly behind Hobart, Tasmania, kunanyi / Mount Wellington is one of Australia’s most distinctive urban mountain biking destinations, offering everything from gentle family-friendly riding to flowing singletrack, technical descents and big mountain adventures. The extensive network across Wellington Park and the lower foothills of kunanyi / Mt Wellington connects with almost 60 km of City of Hobart-maintained MTB and shared-use tracks, as well as fire trails that allow riders to create a huge variety of loops. One of the signature rides is the 11 km North-South Track, which links The Springs on kunanyi / Mt Wellington with Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park. Rated intermediate, it winds through changing forest environments with flowing singletrack, sweeping berms and optional technical features. Riders looking for a bigger loop can tackle the 14.5 km Riding the Mountain circuit, linking trails including North-South, Free Wheel'n, Pitfall, Stumpside, Upper Luge, Crosscut and Rocky Wheel'n for a mix of fast descending, technical terrain and climbing. There are plenty of other options around the mountain too. The 12.7 km Pipeline Track provides an easier, family-friendly ride from Fern Tree through tall forest and fern-filled gullies, while the lower foothills around McRobies Gully offer more technical MTB trails including Slides, Jurassic Shark and Tip Top. With connections towards Glenorchy MTB Park and Hobart’s surrounding trail network, kunanyi / Mt Wellington can deliver anything from an easy scenic pedal to a full day of technical mountain biking. RTS Tip: Don’t assume every track on kunanyi / Mt Wellington is open to bikes. Cycling is permitted on formed roads and fire trails plus specifically designated shared-use and bike trails, while riding walking-only tracks can result in fines. Mountain weather can also change extremely quickly, so check conditions and trail alerts before setting out and carry an extra layer even when Hobart is warm and sunny.
