Lomandra MTB
About this ride
Lomandra MTB, in Samford Conservation Park on Brisbane’s north-western fringe, is the main trailhead for a well-established network of purpose-built mountain bike trails and shared forest tracks. The riding is predominantly intermediate, combining flowing singletrack, natural features, sustained climbs and fast descents through open eucalypt and ironbark forest. The official network includes eight MTB-only trails, with the Lomandra trailhead providing access to Pipeline, Water Tank, Mopoke, Green Tree Snake, Sunrise and Whipsnake, as well as connections towards Lorikeet, Sunset, Bandicoot and Kombi. Most trails are intermediate-rated, while Whipsnake is difficult, delivering a 2.3 km one-way descent for more experienced riders. A good way to explore the network is to leave the Lomandra warm-up area via the 600 m Green Tree Snake, then climb Lomandra Road towards Three Ways Road. From here, several official loops can be created, including a return via Kombi, a Bandicoot–Sunset combination, or Lorikeet. This makes it easy to keep adding distance and difficulty as your confidence and fitness build. Kombi is one of the network’s signature descents, running for approximately 2.7 km one way, while Bandicoot provides another substantial 2.46 km of trail. Shorter trails around the Lomandra hub are useful for warming up or linking into the larger network. The dedicated Lomandra warm-up area gives riders somewhere to practise before heading onto the main trails. Beyond the MTB-only singletrack, Samford Conservation Park also contains an extensive network of shared trails, where cyclists must give way to walkers and horse riders. Nearby Bunyaville Conservation Park can also be reached by bike or a short drive for even more riding. RTS Tip: For your first Lomandra ride, head out on Green Tree Snake, climb towards Three Ways and return via Kombi for a great introduction to the network. Most of the purpose-built trails are blue/intermediate, so newer riders should take their time rather than assuming the warm-up area means the whole network is beginner-friendly. Avoid riding after heavy rain or when the trails are soft and muddy, and download the official map before setting out — there are plenty of intersecting forest roads and trail options.
