About this ride

Long Plain Hut to Hainsworth Hut – Kosciuszko Bikepacking Long Plain Hut to Hainsworth Hut is a brilliant overnight bikepacking adventure through the high plains of Kosciuszko National Park, combining remote gravel and fire trails, historic alpine huts and beautiful Snowy Mountains landscapes. Covering around 50km over two days, the route starts and finishes at historic Long Plain Hut and explores the quieter northern end of Kosciuszko National Park. Unlike some of the more mountainous rides around the Main Range, Long Plain delivers that classic Australian alpine experience without enormous amounts of climbing. The journey follows dirt roads and backcountry trails across open high plains and through snow gum woodland, with Hainsworth Hut providing one of the main destinations. Built around 1951 during the region's grazing era, the hut is one of several historic structures scattered throughout Long Plain. Riders can make the adventure bigger by adding detours to other historic huts and homesteads, turning a relatively short hut-to-hut journey into a roughly 50km weekend bikepacking loop. It's a fantastic way to slow down, carry your camping gear and spend a night surrounded by the quiet landscapes of the Australian High Country. While the riding itself isn't exceptionally technical, don't mistake that for an easy beginner trip. This is remote alpine country, and riders need to be comfortable with self-supported riding, navigation, camping and changing weather. A mountain bike or capable gravel bike with good tyres is recommended. Historic huts should also be treated as emergency shelter rather than planned accommodation, so riders need to carry their own tent or suitable shelter and everything required for an overnight trip. RTS Tip: Long Plain is a fantastic introduction to Kosciuszko bikepacking for riders who already have some backcountry experience. Alpine weather can change incredibly quickly, so pack for cold and wet conditions regardless of the forecast. Long Plain Road is seasonally closed to vehicles during winter, so check current NSW National Parks access, weather, fire and trail conditions before setting out.
