McRobies Gully

McRobies Gully in South Hobart, Tasmania, offers a compact but adventurous mountain bike network in the lower foothills of kunanyi / Mt Wellington, only minutes from the Hobart CBD. The riding centres around Slides, Jurassic Shark and Tip Top, which can be linked with the surrounding fire trails to create a rewarding MTB loop featuring flowing singletrack, fern-filled gullies, climbing and increasingly technical descending. The City of Hobart recommends starting from the Old Farm Road car park, climbing Main Fire Trail and Golden Gully Fire Trail before connecting into the singletrack network. Jurassic Shark is a moderate, flowing dual-direction trail connecting Slides with Tip Top, while Slides Track delivers fun, flowing singletrack as it descends through the forest into McRobies Gully. Experienced riders can add Tip Top, a difficult black-diamond trail featuring narrow technical riding and two steep paved rock chutes. Tip Top is downhill-preferred and should be ridden west to east, with riders returning via the fire trail rather than continuing onto adjoining private land. McRobies Gully also forms part of Hobart’s much larger mountain bike network around kunanyi / Mt Wellington, where almost 60 km of MTB and shared-use tracks are maintained by the City of Hobart. A newer connection via Knocksofty Track links McRobies Gully with Knocklofty Reserve, creating even more options for riders wanting to build a longer South Hobart MTB adventure. RTS Tip: If it’s your first visit, link Jurassic Shark and Slides for a fun introduction before deciding whether you’re ready for Tip Top. The step up is significant — Tip Top’s steep rock chutes and technical terrain are intended for experienced riders. These are also shared-use trails, so stay alert for walkers, follow directional signage and download the current Hobart trail map if you’re linking McRobies Gully into the wider kunanyi / Mt Wellington network.
