Mount Hay

Mount Hay is one of the Blue Mountains most spectacular ridge top rides, combining sweeping valley views, unique heathland and dramatic cliff lines. The ride follows Mount Hay Road, a long gravel route that gradually traverses the plateau through the world heritage National Park. The ride is easily accessible from Leura Railway Station, with a short connection via local roads to the start of Mount Hay Road. From the roundabout, it is approximately 15 km to the Mount Hay car park, making for a 30 km return ride. The first few kilometres are sealed before transitioning to a gravel surface. From the Mount Hay car park, a walking track leads to the summit of Mount Hay. While bikes are not permitted on this section, the short walk is well worth the effort. From the summit, views extend across the vast Grose Valley, surrounding sandstone escarpments and the western plains beyond Sydney. Mount Hay Road is shared with vehicle traffic, so riders should take care, particularly on corners and during busy periods. The road may also be closed from time to time for maintenance, so it is worth checking with National Parks before setting out. For those looking to explore beyond the ride itself, several outstanding walking tracks branch from the Mount Hay area. The walk to Lockleys Pylon is highly recommended and rewards visitors with one of the finest panoramic lookouts in the Blue Mountains, overlooking the Grose Valley and surrounding wilderness. Butterbox Point is another worthwhile side trip, offering dramatic cliff top views and a different perspective across the valley. Both walks are pedestrian only, so bikes should be left and secured before continuing on foot.
