Mount Morgan MTB Trails
About this ride
The Mount Morgan MTB Trails, around 40 km south-west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, offer approximately 25 km of purpose-built mountain bike trails surrounding the picturesque No. 7 Dam recreation area. The network consists of five main loops ranging from green beginner trails through to blue intermediate riding, combining cross-country singletrack, rocky natural terrain, sustained climbs, flowing descents, berms, jumps and optional technical features. Set amongst ironbark forest and the historic hills surrounding the former Mount Morgan mining township, the trails offer impressive views across the dam and surrounding Central Queensland landscape. The five main trails are Gangulu Trail, Bungoona Trail, Miners’ Mercy, Mundagarra and Cutter’s Run, each offering a slightly different riding experience. Gangulu and Miners’ Mercy provide longer XC-style riding and views across the eastern side of the dam, while Bungoona adds climbing, descending, drops, jumps and gap features. Mundagarra rewards a substantial climb with a flowing descent packed with berms and jumps, while Cutter’s Run delivers another fast, flowing descent with views towards Mount Morgan’s historic mine stack. The trailhead at No. 7 Dam makes Mount Morgan particularly good for families and groups, with free parking, toilets, picnic tables, barbecues, a large shaded playground and outdoor exercise equipment. Access to the MTB trails is free, and the network is open around the clock, making it an easy addition to a Rockhampton or Capricorn Region mountain biking trip. For riders travelling through the region, Mount Morgan pairs brilliantly with First Turkey MTB Reserve in Rockhampton. Together, the two networks provide more than 50 km of riding, with Mount Morgan offering predominantly green and blue trails while First Turkey adds a larger selection of technical and gravity-focused terrain. RTS Tip: Mount Morgan is a great network for beginner and intermediate riders, but don’t assume all the blue trails are cruisy — some head into steeper, rockier and more remote terrain. Carry plenty of water in Central Queensland’s warmer months and download the trail map before leaving the trailhead. If you have time after your ride, explore historic Mount Morgan or make it a two-park MTB trip by adding First Turkey in Rockhampton.
