About this ride
Mount Peel Bushland Park, on the south-western edge of Toowoomba near Drayton, Queensland, offers a growing network of purpose-built mountain bike trails through more than 123 hectares of native bushland. The riding is predominantly green-grade singletrack, making Mount Peel particularly well suited to beginner mountain bikers, families, kids and riders wanting to build confidence before progressing to Toowoomba’s more technical MTB networks. The park also contains more than 4 km of shared-use firebreaks linking its trail areas, five peaks and several lookouts with views across Toowoomba and the surrounding Darling Downs. The standout ride is the 6 km Wakka Wakka Trail, a one-way clockwise singletrack circuit made up of four stacked loops. Riders can exit at the intervening firebreaks to create shorter rides, making it easy to tailor the distance for younger or developing riders. Other dedicated MTB trails include the 1.25 km Bunda Trail, 825 m Wakka Bunda connector, 2.75 km Darla Trail and 3.04 km Gumbi Gumbi Trail, providing plenty of options for linking together a longer Mount Peel mountain bike ride. The trails feature relatively gentle gradients, good sight lines and limited technical obstacles, with a mixture of flowing singletrack and easy climbing rather than the jumps, drops and technical gravity terrain found at nearby Jubilee Park. Wildlife is another part of the experience, with kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, birdlife and occasionally koalas found throughout the reserve. Main riding access is available from the Darling Street and Westminster Street trailheads. RTS Tip: Mount Peel is a great choice if you’re new to mountain biking or riding with kids. Start with the shorter stacked loops of Wakka Wakka and add more as confidence grows, then use Wakka Bunda to connect into the wider network. Pay attention to trail direction — several MTB trails are strictly one-way, while Wakka Bunda is two-way. If you’re ready for something more technical afterwards, nearby Jubilee Park offers the natural next step into Toowoomba’s blue and black MTB trails.
