About this ride
Mt Tumbarumba Mountain Bike Park is a community-owned and operated MTB destination on the edge of Tumbarumba in the NSW Snowy Valleys. Rising around 300m above town, the mountain delivers dedicated climbing trails and gravity-focused descents through open eucalypt forest, rocky gullies and enormous granite formations, with expansive views towards the Snowy Mountains. The park currently offers around 22km of gravity-focused trails, with green, blue and black options designed to cater for novice through to advanced riders. The terrain is impressively varied, mixing technical granite riding, machine-built flow, jump trails and more natural technical descents. One of Mt Tumbarumba’s biggest drawcards is the 315m of usable elevation. Riders can earn their turns using the dedicated climbing trails or book an uplift shuttle to maximise descending time. Private self-shuttling isn’t permitted, so anyone wanting uplifts needs to use the authorised shuttle service. There’s a strong progression element too. Green trails provide an approachable introduction to the mountain before riders move onto faster blue flow and jump trails and eventually the more technical black terrain. Trails such as Cowabunga, Cattlepult, Send It Express and Tumba Rumble can be linked to create long top-to-bottom descents. What makes the park particularly special is the story behind it. After drought, bushfires and other challenges hit the region, the local community rallied behind the idea of using mountain biking to help strengthen Tumbarumba's visitor economy. The mountain was ultimately purchased through community fundraising — including locals auctioning cattle to help buy the land — and is now managed by Cycle Tumbarumba Inc. The result is promoted as Australia's first community-owned and operated mountain bike park. There’s plenty more riding around town as well. Tumbarumba has additional XC trails including Mason’s Hill, plus a pump track and bike playground, gravel routes and the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail, making it easy to build a multi-day cycling trip rather than visiting solely for the bike park. For riders searching for Mt Tumbarumba MTB, Tumbarumba mountain bike trails, Snowy Valleys MTB, shuttle mountain biking in NSW or gravity riding near the Snowy Mountains, this is quickly becoming one of regional NSW’s most interesting riding destinations. RTS Tip: Mt Tumbarumba is a paid-access facility, so every rider needs a valid Mountain Pass, with shuttle passes purchased separately. The park also closes for a winter season because of icy conditions, so check current operating status before planning a trip. The official trail map is available through Trailforks and the park recommends checking it for individual trail closures before riding.
