Nail Can Hill

Nail Can Hill is Albury’s major mountain biking playground, rising immediately west of the city and offering a surprisingly extensive network of cross-country, trail and gravity-style riding through dry eucalypt bushland. The trails are closely associated with Albury Wodonga Mountain Bikers (AWMTB), which maintains and promotes riding across the hill. Current Trailforks mapping shows around 70 MTB trails across roughly 30km of mapped riding at Nail Can Hill itself, with green, blue, black and double-black options. The broader Albury trail region extends further again, so there’s plenty here for anything from a quick after-work lap to several hours exploring the hill. The riding has a distinctly natural, old-school Australian MTB feel. Expect rocky singletrack, loose surfaces, punchy climbs, technical descents and plenty of natural features rather than a network dominated by smooth machine-built flow. Trails such as Home Run, Dirt Luge, Shelob’s Revenge, Twister and No More Secrets give riders a good taste of the variety available. There’s a strong XC heritage here, with Nail Can Hill regularly used for club racing and the long-running Nail Can Hill MTB race. Gravity riders aren’t forgotten either — No More Secrets is the hill’s dedicated downhill-oriented trail, with rocky, rutted terrain, drops and more challenging lines. The network has also received significant investment in recent years. AlburyCity, NSW Crown Lands and AWMTB completed a project upgrading more than 10km of existing MTB trails, repairing erosion and improving trail features while also closing illegal trails and B-lines to create a more sustainable sanctioned network. The recommended main access point is at the end of Range Road, off Logan Road, where riders can access the network and AWMTB’s official Nail Can Hill trail map. For riders searching for Albury MTB, Nail Can Hill mountain bike trails, Albury Wodonga mountain biking or MTB trails near the NSW/Victoria border, Nail Can is an essential local network — and its location also makes it a great stop on a bigger riding trip incorporating Beechworth, Yackandandah, Bright or Mt Beauty. RTS Tip: Nail Can Hill is a proper network rather than a single signed loop, so grab the current trail map before heading out. First-time visitors can build an XC loop around the easier and intermediate trails, while experienced riders have plenty of technical and gravity options to explore. Trailforks currently lists Nail Can Hill as open, but check recent reports before travelling as individual trail conditions can change.
