Pioneer Rail Trail

The Pioneer Rail Trail is an easy, family-friendly 6 km railside trail running between Oberon and Hazelgrove in the NSW Central Tablelands. Following the historic Oberon–Tarana railway corridor, the trail winds gently through open farming country and offers a relaxed ride with plenty of railway heritage along the way. The trail is predominantly sealed with a gentle gradient, making it suitable for riders of most abilities, including families, recreational cyclists, touring and hybrid bikes and mountain bikes. Interpretive signage along the route shares the story of the railway and surrounding region, while the old railway infrastructure adds plenty of character to the journey. Starting around the historic Oberon Railway Station, the route passes the railway precinct and museums before heading out through the Central Tablelands countryside towards Hazelgrove. Riders should take care at the uncontrolled road crossings at Albion Street and Lowes Mount Road. At Hazelgrove, restored railway tracks, switches and a passing loop hint at ongoing efforts to bring heritage trains back to the line. At just 6 km each way, it's an approachable ride on its own or an easy addition to a day exploring Oberon. The area also offers plenty to see off the bike, including the Oberon Railway Museum, Mayfield Garden, nearby cellar doors and the wider Blue Mountains region.
