About this ride

Royal National Park MTB & Cycling Trails – Sydney Royal National Park, on Sydney’s southern doorstep, offers a fantastic mix of mountain biking, fire-trail riding and easy gravel-style cycling through rainforest, sandstone bushland and along the Hacking River. Rather than one purpose-built MTB park, the Royal is a large network where riders can link approved cycling trails into anything from a short family ride to several hours of exploring. One of the best-known MTB options is the Loftus Loop, an official 10km loop starting near the NPWS office at Farnell Avenue. The route combines around 8km of trail with 2km of designated bike track, changing from wide, relatively easy trails to rockier singletrack, creek crossings and steeper sections around Temptation Creek. NPWS notes that linking trails allow rides ranging from around 15 minutes to four hours. For something easier, Lady Carrington Drive is one of Sydney’s classic off-road rides. The historic carriage route follows the Hacking River for 10km one way from near Audley, crossing 15 creeks and travelling beneath blue gums, turpentines and pockets of rainforest. Its wide track and relatively gentle terrain make it a great choice for families, newer riders and gravel bikes, although it can become boggy after rain. There’s also riding around the East Heathcote trails, where approved cycling routes and fire trails provide more opportunities to build longer MTB loops through the western side of the park. Royal National Park specifically operates a “no sign – no ride” policy for singletrack: cycling is permitted on fire trails, but singletracks can only be ridden where they are specifically marked for cycling at the trailhead. With entry points around Loftus, Heathcote, Waterfall and Audley, the park is also unusually accessible for a major bushland riding destination, including options for riders arriving by train. For riders searching for Royal National Park mountain bike trails, Loftus MTB, Heathcote mountain biking, gravel riding near Sydney or MTB trails in southern Sydney, the Royal offers plenty to explore and is one of Sydney’s most established bush riding areas. RTS Tip: Think of Royal National Park as a collection of individual rides rather than one MTB trail network. Loftus Loop is the pick for MTB, while Lady Carrington Drive is brilliant for an easier gravel or family ride. Most importantly, stick to authorised cycling trails — fire trails are permitted, but don't assume every piece of visible singletrack is legal to ride. Check the current NPWS cycling map, park alerts and trail signage before heading out.
