South Boundary Road
About this ride
South Boundary Road – Brisbane Gravel & MTB Ride South Boundary Road is one of Brisbane's classic off-road cycling adventures, taking riders deep into D’Aguilar National Park on a long, flowing fire trail between The Gap and Mount Nebo. The official trail runs for approximately 22km one way, linking the Brisbane suburb of The Gap with Bullockys Dam near Mount Nebo Road. Ride it as a point-to-point adventure, turn around and make it a seriously solid return ride, or link South Boundary Road with the surrounding trail network to create a much bigger day in the hills. Don't mistake “fire road” for flat or easy. South Boundary Road follows the forested ridges of D’Aguilar National Park and includes several long climbs and descents, with plenty of elevation packed into the journey. Under the tyres, expect gravel and double-track fire road with surfaces that can become loose or rough in places. The scenery makes the climbing worthwhile. The route travels through tall eucalypt forest with opportunities for views back towards Enoggera Reservoir, giving riders a genuine bush adventure remarkably close to central Brisbane. South Boundary Road is popular with both mountain bike and capable gravel bike riders, and it also provides access to a much larger network of tracks throughout southern D’Aguilar National Park. Routes can be linked towards Mount Nebo, Bellbird Grove, Camp Mountain, the Goat Track and other forest roads to create some seriously good Brisbane gravel adventures. It's this combination of accessibility and proper backcountry riding that makes South Boundary Road such a great option for riders searching for gravel and mountain biking near Brisbane — you can leave the suburbs behind and be riding through forested ridgelines without travelling hours from the city. RTS Tip: South Boundary Road is a shared trail used by cyclists, walkers and horse riders, so ride accordingly and give way where required. Some descents have steep drop-offs and conditions can change after rain, so control your speed and ride to the conditions. Check current Queensland Parks alerts before heading out and carry enough water, food, repair gear and navigation for your planned route.
