About this ride
Tolmans Hill MTB Trails, in Hobart’s southern foothills, provides a mix of family-friendly bike tracks, gravel fire trails and connections into the larger Ridgeway and kunanyi / Mount Wellington trail network. It’s less of a standalone purpose-built MTB park and more of a gateway into Hobart’s extensive bushland riding, with the City of Hobart maintaining almost 60 km of MTB and shared-use tracks across its reserves. At Tolmans Hill Park on Woodcutters Road, there’s a looped mini bike track designed specifically for younger riders developing their mountain-bike skills. The surrounding park has a playground, picnic areas, shelter, barbecues, toilets and parking, making this a particularly handy option for families wanting somewhere for kids to practise riding. For riders wanting more adventure, the Tolmans Hill Fire Trail heads into nearby Ridgeway Park. The roughly 1.4 km dirt and gravel route is open to mountain bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes and gains around 80 m of elevation. It connects into a broader maze of trails around Ridgeway, including Ribbon Track, The Serpent and Shaking the Serpent’s Tail, allowing riders to build much longer loops through the surrounding bushland. The real advantage of Tolmans Hill is its connectivity. The surrounding fire-trail network provides links towards Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway, Fern Tree and kunanyi / Mount Wellington, opening up significantly longer rides for experienced riders who know the network. For more technical riding, nearby South Hobart and McRobies Gully offer sanctioned trails such as Jurassic Shark, Slides and Tip Top, while the broader mountain network includes routes such as the North-South Track and the 14.5 km Riding the Mountain circuit. RTS Tip: Tolmans Hill works best as two different riding experiences: families and young riders can head to Tolmans Hill Park for the mini MTB loops, while experienced riders can use the area as an access point into Ridgeway and the wider kunanyi / Mount Wellington network. Download an official bushland map before exploring beyond the park — there are numerous informal trails around Hobart, and riders should stick to tracks where cycling is permitted.
