Wambenger Trails - Wellington National Park
About this ride
The Wambenger Trails in Wellington National Park, around 20 km west of Collie in Western Australia’s South West, form the largest mountain bike trail network in WA, with nearly 100 km of riding linking Wellington Dam, Honeymoon Pool, Mount Lennard and the Collie River Valley. The network caters for everyone from beginners through to experienced riders, combining easy forest loops, flowing descents, technical downhill trails and longer cross-country adventures through beautiful jarrah and marri forest. The network is split by the Collie River into Wellington Trails East and Wellington Trails West. The eastern side around Wellington Dam, Potters Gorge and Honeymoon Pool has many of the newer trails and some of the best beginner-friendly riding. Green trails such as Van Dam, Big Dipper, Lichen This and Weir Ya Goin’ provide approachable riding while still incorporating berms, rollers and optional technical features. Intermediate riders have a huge amount to explore. Pipe’n Hot is a 1.1 km blue descent featuring rock gardens and jumpable rollers, while Whip’n Hollow, Scull, The Watcher and Honeymoon’s Over add everything from fast descending to longer cross-country riding and sustained climbing. GOAT Track, at 5.1 km, delivers a classic WA cross-country adventure over the region’s famous pea-gravel terrain. There’s plenty for advanced riders too. Send It is a 2.3 km black trail loaded with technical features, while Black Glove, Firetail and Wam Bam provide harder descending options around the Wellington Dam side of the network. Elixir takes a more flow-focused approach, packing large berms, hips and jumps into an 800 m descent. Across the river, Wellington Trails West incorporates the renowned Pile Road and Mount Lennard trails. This side has a more natural, old-school character, with gently rolling singletrack and fewer machine-built features. It predominantly caters to intermediate riders, with blue trails plus several black and double-black options and a dedicated jump area with doubles and tabletops. The wider Wambenger project has added 47 km of new dedicated MTB trail within Wellington National Park, which together with upgraded existing trails has created a network of almost 95 km. A realigned section of the Munda Biddi Trail also connects Wellington Dam with Collie, opening up possibilities for much longer rides and multi-day adventures. RTS Tip: If it’s your first visit, start on the Wellington Dam side with Van Dam, Big Dipper and Lichen This before progressing onto the blue and black descents. Give yourself a full day if you want to explore properly — this is a huge network, not a single MTB loop. Download the Wambenger Trails app and the separate East and West trail maps before heading out. Also note that as of August 2026, Wellington Dam Road is closed on weekdays from 10 June 2026 during construction of the new Wellington Dam Kiosk, but remains open on weekends, so check current access before your trip.
