Warimoo Downhill MTB Park
About this ride
Warrimoo Downhill MTB Park, better known to many Sydney riders as “Crackers”, is a sanctioned gravity trail at St Ives Chase on Sydney’s North Shore. It’s a small network in terms of distance, but it’s designed specifically for riders looking for serious technical downhill terrain. The main attraction is a roughly 600m double-black-diamond downhill trail, accompanied by a dedicated return climbing route. Ku-ring-gai Council describes it as a world-class downhill experience intended for skilled and experienced riders, so this is definitely a case where trail length doesn’t reflect the challenge. Expect steep, technical and demanding riding, making use of the natural Sydney bushland and sandstone terrain. Unlike larger bike parks with dozens of trails, Warrimoo is essentially about lapping one challenging downhill line, climbing back to the top and going again. There is also a small beginner loop, providing an easier option away from the main double-black trail. The trail has an interesting history. Warrimoo originally existed as an informal MTB network known as Crackers, but was closed in 2017 due to concerns about the environmentally significant Coastal Upland Swamp and surrounding bushland. Council subsequently worked with riders, environmental specialists, trail builders and government agencies to develop a sustainable sanctioned downhill trail while protecting sensitive areas. Today the park is supported by the volunteer Moo Crew through Ku-ring-gai Council’s Trailcare program. Volunteers help with trail maintenance, rock armouring, erosion control and environmental work, helping keep one of Sydney’s relatively rare sanctioned downhill trails open. Access is from Warrimoo Avenue, St Ives Chase, with nearby Warrimoo Oval providing parking, toilets, drinking water, picnic facilities and other amenities. For riders searching for Warrimoo MTB, Crackers MTB, Sydney downhill trails, North Shore mountain biking or double-black MTB trails in Sydney, this is a short but seriously challenging trail worth knowing about. RTS Tip: Don’t underestimate Warrimoo because it’s only around 600m long — the main trail is double black and intended for experienced riders. The trail can also close following rain or for maintenance, so check its status before travelling and never ride when it’s signed closed.
