Wellington Mills
About this ride
Wellington Mill MTB Trails, often known by riders as “Welli Mills”, is an old-school downhill mountain biking area in the Ferguson Valley near Wellington Mill, Western Australia, east of Bunbury. Built into a steep forested hillside, the network has long been a cornerstone of the South West’s downhill racing scene, offering short, steep and technical descents rather than the longer cross-country riding found around nearby Collie. The traditional Wellington Mills network includes trails such as Central Line, Gravity Track, Rock Berm and Roots, Slickrock Track and Top Left Track, with an uphill return track providing access back towards the top. Individual descents are generally only around 300 m to 1.1 km long, but they make excellent use of the hillside’s elevation. Expect a distinctly natural and technical style of riding, with steep chutes, exposed roots, rocks, tight forest sections and rough surfaces rather than heavily sculpted flow trails. The area is best suited to experienced intermediate and advanced riders, particularly those comfortable with downhill-style terrain and inspecting technical features before committing. Historical regional planning documents specifically identify Wellington Mills as a significant downhill venue used for racing. Wellington Mills also sits within a much bigger South West MTB destination. A trip here can easily be combined with the huge Wellington National Park Wambenger network near Collie, which now contains almost 95 km of trails ranging from easy green riding to technical black descents. RTS Tip: Wellington Mills is one for riders chasing raw, old-school downhill rather than cruisy trail-centre laps. Give every descent a sighting run first, particularly after storms or long periods between visits, as natural features and trail conditions can change. A full-face helmet and appropriate protection are a smart choice here. Also check current local access and trail conditions before making a dedicated trip, as Wellington Mills is less formalised than the nearby Wambenger networks around Collie.
