Wild Mersey - Railton
About this ride
The Railton MTB network sits at the heart of Tasmania’s Wild Mersey Mountain Bike Trails, an interconnected system of more than 98 km linking Latrobe, Railton and Sheffield. Starting beside Goliath Park in Railton, the network offers a particularly strong mix of flowing beginner trails, longer cross-country adventures and increasingly technical intermediate and difficult singletrack. Railton currently has 19 named trails, with eight easy, nine moderate and two difficult trails. Green options include Teleport, Green Hornet, Super Hornet, Easy Tiger, Green Mile, Ewoks and Sheffield Way, while intermediate riders can tackle Franky Flyer, Raptor Ridge, Funky Chicken, Sweet Caroline, 7 Shreds, Harden Up, Gnarvana, Woodhooker and Pony Up. The two difficult trails, Back To School and Echidin’ Me, provide the network’s more technical challenges. One of Railton’s standout beginner rides combines Teleport and Green Hornet. Teleport provides a gentle 3 km climb, followed by the 2 km Green Hornet descent, which is wide, flowing and designed to let newer riders build speed and confidence without throwing major technical obstacles at them. Wild Mersey describes it as arguably one of Tasmania’s best beginner loops. More experienced riders can build considerably bigger loops. The official Redline Loop is around 12.1 km, while Squiggly is approximately 15.8 km and incorporates Pony Up and Gnarvana. The Round The Outside route stretches to around 17.5 km, linking 11 trails and including the difficult Back To School and Echidin’ Me. Railton is also brilliantly positioned for a bigger Wild Mersey adventure. The easy-rated Railton Express runs 9.75 km to Latrobe, while trails on the other side of the network connect towards Sheffield. This means you can use Railton as a base and ride between all three Wild Mersey trail areas rather than treating them as separate destinations. The main Railton trailhead is at the end of Giblin Street beside Goliath Park, and there’s also an asphalt pump track in town, making Railton particularly good for families and developing riders. RTS Tip: For a first visit, ride the 5 km Up Then Down loop — Teleport up and Green Hornet back down. It’s a great introduction to Wild Mersey and an ideal progression ride for newer mountain bikers. Stronger riders should step up to Redline, Squiggly or Round The Outside, or use Railton as the launching point for a much bigger ride towards Latrobe or Sheffield. Download the current map and check trail status before setting out, especially if you’re planning one of the longer inter-town rides.
