About this ride

The Wooditjup Trails, just north of Margaret River in Western Australia, are the centrepiece of the town’s mountain biking scene. Set within Bramley National Park and adjoining forest, the broader Wooditjup riding area offers roughly 40 km of singletrack, with everything from easy green trails to flowing intermediate descents and technical black jump lines. The riding is famous for making a lot out of relatively little elevation, using berms, rollers, tabletops, natural gullies and fast contouring trail to create a network that is all about flow. The purpose-built core network, formerly known as Compartment 10, contains around 10 km of trail across 17 named trails, with another roughly 15 km immediately across the boundary in The Pines. Trails link together closely, making it easy to keep adding laps and different lines without lengthy fire-road transfers. Entry is free and the trails are open seven days a week. Newer riders can start with Cut Cork, a green loop that contours alongside the Wadandi Track and passes through beautiful karri forest beside Bramley Brook. From there, trails such as A River Somewhere, High Horse, Pugsley, Big Pine and Line Manager introduce faster blue-rated riding with berms, rollers, jumps and flowing corners. Big Pine is one of the network favourites and regularly features in the Cape to Cape MTB event. Advanced riders aren't forgotten. Cash & Karri is a black-rated jump trail inspired by Canadian bike-park riding, with step-ups, step-downs and a large hip jump, while Paper Trail delivers a more technical descent incorporating rock gardens, doubles and multiple line choices. One of Wooditjup's biggest strengths is how well it connects with the rest of Margaret River's riding. The Wadandi Track acts as a cycling backbone through the area, while connections lead into The Pines, Creek Trails and other nearby singletrack, allowing stronger riders to build a substantial day out. The wider Margaret River area now has nearly 80 km of sanctioned and mapped singletrack. The easiest starting point is Rotary Park or the Carters Road trailhead, just outside Margaret River. Rotary Park has parking, toilets, drinking water, shelter and barbecues, while bike hire, cafés and bike supplies are readily available in town. RTS Tip: Wooditjup is brilliant for progression. Start with Cut Cork, then move onto trails such as A River Somewhere, Big Pine and Pugsley before considering the black lines. Don't be fooled by the modest elevation — the builders have packed an impressive amount of speed and fun into a small hillside. If you've got more time, cross into The Pines and keep exploring; together the networks offer considerably more riding than the core Wooditjup loop suggests. And respect the local request: no skidding — the area's fast, groomed corners don't need extra help getting blown out.
