About this ride

Yackandandah MTB Park, better known as Yack Tracks, is a classic cross-country mountain bike network in Stanley State Forest near Yackandandah in Victoria’s High Country. More than 70 km of predominantly hand-built singletrack winds through Box-Ironbark forest and historic gold-mining country, with natural terrain, creek gullies, rocky features and plenty of climbing. Most of the network is blue/intermediate, although easier and more advanced options allow riders to choose their level of challenge. The network is arranged around several well-signposted loops. The Green Loop is 4.2 km, while the intermediate options include Yakonda Loop (10.8 km), Ground Effect Loop (17.2 km), Kokoda Loop (17.8 km) and Diggers Loop (18.5 km). There’s also a 4 km all-abilities/adaptive MTB loop, making Yackandandah accessible to a broader range of riders. Yack’s character is distinctly raw and natural rather than heavily sculpted bike-park riding. Expect narrow singletrack, rocks, roots, creek crossings, short technical sections and plenty of punchy climbing followed by rewarding flowing descents. Remnants of the region’s historic gold-mining activity are scattered throughout the forest and have even influenced some of the trail features. For experienced riders looking for something harder, the network includes optional advanced sections such as Carcass Canyon, which drops into a historic gold-mining water race. The numerous linking trails also mean stronger riders can combine the marked loops into a much larger cross-country adventure. Yack Tracks now connects directly into the spectacular Indigo Epic, a 56 km blue/intermediate MTB trail linking Yackandandah and Beechworth. The Yackandandah portion can be ridden as an approximately 39 km loop back to town, or riders can tackle the entire Indigo Epic for a big all-day adventure between the two historic towns. RTS Tip: If it’s your first visit, start with the Green Loop or the shorter Yakonda Loop before committing to one of the bigger intermediate circuits. Yack Tracks are famous for their hand-built, natural XC character, so expect the blue trails to feel quite different from smooth modern flow trails. Download the current map before heading out and watch for numbered signposts at key intersections. For a huge day on the bike, combine Yack Tracks with the Indigo Epic — just allow plenty of time, food and water for the full 56 km adventure.
