How to use the Trip Planner on Ride the State

Australia-wide29 Sep 2026By Ride the State

Plan cycling trips on Ride the State — start from a ride, event or business with Add to trip, or open Plan your adventure. Name dates, build day-by-day itineraries, add stays and stops, and share with mates.

Planning a race weekend, a dirt-bag trail trip, or a multi-stop road adventure? Ride the State's Trip Planner is where you turn rides, events and places into one itinerary you can share with mates.

From the FAQ: The Trip Planner lets you build detailed cycling itineraries from weekend getaways to multi-day interstate trips. Add rides day-by-day, note accommodation and key locations, track events, share plans with mates, and view everything in a clear layout.

Browsing the hub is free. Creating an account unlocks the Trip Planner (plus favourites and Ride Rewards) — see the FAQ. This guide walks the real buttons and labels on the site.

You need a free account

Trip Planner lives on your profile under Planned Trips.

  • Logged out, Plan your adventure in the top nav (and Add to trip on listings) sends you to Sign in with a return path of /profile?tab=trips.
  • Logged in, Plan your adventure opens the trip wizard (Let's plan your adventure!), and Add to trip opens the add dialog straight away.
  • FAQ wording: browsing is free; an account unlocks the Trip Planner, Ride Rewards points, saving favourites and contributing content. Sign in via “Sign in” (or Plan your adventure) — email signup is supported.

Where you can start a trip (entry points)

You do not have to build a blank trip from scratch. Verified Add to trip / planner entry points:

From a ride

Open a ride on Discover Rides. On the ride detail, tap Add to trip. That drops the ride into an existing trip or a brand-new one.

From an event

Open an event on the events finder. On the event detail (and on cards where that control is shown), tap Add to trip. Full Interested / Going / calendar flow lives in the Events how-to — this guide stays on the planner side.

From a business

Open a listing on Businesses. When the listing unlocks it, you will see Add to trip on the business detail — handy for accommodation, bike shops, hire, food and other rider stops.

From Plan your adventure / Planned Trips

  • Nav / homepage CTA: Plan your adventure
  • Profile tab: Planned Trips (also labelled My Trips in the account menu)
  • On Your trips, use New trip or the empty-state Create a trip

(Club cards were checked this pass — no club-card Add to trip control showed up. Save the club, then add rides and events around it.)

Add to a trip — the shared dialog

Wherever Add to trip appears, the dialog title is Add to a trip.

Copy under the title follows this pattern:

  • Add "{title}" to your itinerary on its event date. — when the item already has a date (typical for events)
  • Add "{title}" to your itinerary — you can slot it into a specific day later. — when there is no date yet (typical for rides / many businesses)

Then:

  1. Your trips — pick an existing trip and tap Add
  2. Or Or create a new trip — type a Trip name, tap Create
  3. Empty list copy: No trips yet — create one below.
  4. Success toasts include Added "{title}" to your trip on its event date (when dated) and Created trip and added "{title}"
  5. Close when you are done

Logged out, the same Add to trip label is a link through to sign-in rather than the dialog.

Create a trip from Planned Trips

Open Planned Trips on your profile.

Header copy: Your trips — Bundle rides with accommodation, transport, food and activities into one plan. Button: New trip.

Empty state:

  • Title: Plan your first ride trip
  • Body: Group rides into a trip, drop them on dates, add notes and start building your itinerary. Accommodation, shuttles and food are coming soon — add them as custom items in the meantime.
  • Button: Create a trip

New trip / Edit trip form

Dialog titles: New trip or Edit trip.

Helper: Give your trip a name and (optionally) dates and a destination.

Fields you will see:

  • Name (placeholder example: Easter weekend in Derby)
  • Destination / region (example: Derby, TAS)
  • Start date / End date
  • Base area (optional) — Search a town, region or address so we can suggest rides, businesses and events nearby — even before you add anything to the trip.
  • Notes field (example prompt along the lines of pickup / base-camp notes)

Save with Create trip or Save changes. Toasts: Trip created / Trip updated.

Homepage wizard — Let's plan your adventure!

Logged in, Plan your adventure can open a five-step wizard titled Let's plan your adventure! Step labels:

  1. Let's start with a name.
  2. Nice — where are we heading?
  3. You're doing great.
  4. Almost there — drop your pins.
  5. Last step. Let's ride!

Along the way you choose:

  • One destination (A single base or area) or Road trip / multi-stop (Several locations) — multi-stop asks How many main stops / locations? with Main stops — you'll add rides later.
  • Optional Destination / region (placeholder Derby, TAS or South Coast NSW)
  • Dates: Exact dates (I know when), Roughly X days (Dates later), or A month (Just an idea) — with Start date / End date, Number of days, or Month / Year as relevant

Finish with Create trip & start planning. Success toast: Trip created — let's build it out. You land on the trip in Planned Trips.

Build the itinerary day by day

Open a trip from Your trips. Item types you will see labelled in the planner:

  • Ride
  • Stay (accommodation)
  • Transport
  • Food
  • Activity
  • Event
  • Other

Useful controls and copy observed in the planner UI:

  • Quick add to this day
  • Nearby this day / suggestions within X km
  • Find more rides / Find more businesses
  • Add rides to trip (includes a Bucket list path for saved rides)
  • Add to trip again when adding a partner or custom stop — Pick a category to see suggested local partners — or type your own details for anywhere else. Categories include things like Accommodation, Bike Hire, Bike shops, Activities nearby, Bars / Breweries, Events and Other Services
  • For stays: Start day / End day (check-in / check-out style)
  • Trip preferences — Choose the riding you're after and the kinds of places you'd like suggested for each day. You can still add anything you like by hand. Toast: Trip preferences saved
  • Days can show as dated labels, Day N when dates are still loose, plus an Unscheduled bucket for items not parked on a day yet
  • Empty itinerary copy: Nothing planned for this trip yet. / Nothing planned yet. Use Add to trip above to start your itinerary.

Toasts you may see while editing: Added to trip, Item updated, Could not save item, Could not move item, Could not reorder.

Note: the Planned Trips empty state still says accommodation, shuttles and food are coming soon as polished defaults — in the meantime add them as custom / partner items via Add to trip inside the trip. Stick to what the buttons show.

Share with mates

On a trip, look for Share / invite (short label Share on small screens).

Share dialog behaviours verified in product copy:

  • Share link URL shape: /trips/join/{token} on ridethestate.com.au
  • Copy — toast Link copied to clipboard (or Could not copy link)
  • Enable / disable — toasts Share link enabled / Share link disabled / Nobody new can join.
  • Rotate — confirm Rotate the link? Any previously shared link stops working. then Share link rotated — old link no longer works
  • Collaborator roles include View only and Can edit (plus owner-only style controls)
  • Leave trip if you are on someone else's shared plan

Also on the trip: Print / PDF (screen-reader label Print or save as PDF).

Pair the planner with the rest of the hub

  • Discover Rides — find the dirt / roads / paths, then Add to trip
  • Events — park the race or social on the right day (Events how-to)
  • Businesses — stays, shops, hire and coffee when the listing shows Add to trip
  • Bike trails near me — scout an area before you lock days
  • Clubs — know who is local even if the club card itself is not an Add-to-trip source
  • Ride Rewards — points and perks once you are signed in
