Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail
About this ride
This one needs a little care because the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail is still being developed. Rail Trails Australia currently lists about 67 km open across four separate sections, rather than one continuous ride. The long-term vision is much bigger, following the former railway corridor through Central Queensland towards Gayndah. Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail – Central Queensland The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail is an adventurous developing rail trail through Central Queensland, following sections of the historic railway corridor between the Boyne Valley and North Burnett regions. Unlike the smooth, manicured surface of many Australian rail trails, this one delivers a much more rugged experience. Expect coarse gravel, railway ballast, loose sand, rough gully crossings and remote country, making the open cycling sections particularly suited to mountain bikes and riders looking for a genuine off-road adventure. One of the highlights is the spectacular Dawes Range section between Barrimoon and Builyan, where approximately 25km of trail winds through the ranges using the old railway formation. Riders travel through six historic railway tunnels, impressive cuttings and sweeping bends while taking in huge views across the surrounding countryside. Further south, the Mundubbera to Mount Debateable section follows around 30km of the former railway corridor near the Burnett River. This section is particularly rich in railway heritage, with numerous historic bridges along the route. The bridges themselves are not currently open to trail users, so riders use temporary bypasses that can be steep and rough. Additional shorter sections are also progressively opening as volunteers and local communities work towards the much bigger vision for the Boyne Burnett corridor. This is not currently one continuous end-to-end rail trail, but that's part of what makes it interesting. Individual sections can be explored as standalone rides while the wider project continues to grow. For riders searching for rail trails in Queensland, mountain biking around Monto and Mundubbera or cycling adventures in Central Queensland, the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail offers something very different from the typical recreational rail trail. RTS Tip: The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail is still under development, so don't assume the entire former railway corridor is open or rideable. Some open sections are remote and genuinely rough, with loose sand, railway ballast, steep bridge bypasses, cattle gates and limited or no mobile reception. Carry plenty of water, offline navigation and repair equipment, and check the latest trail information before setting out. Ride The State will continue adding the individual open sections as separate Ride Cards over time as the trail develops.
