Bridle Track
About this ride
The Bridle Track is one of the Central West's classic adventure routes, linking Bathurst with the historic gold-mining village of Hill End through rugged bushland and spectacular Macquarie River country. Originally established in the 1800s as a route between Bathurst and Hill End during the gold rush, the track takes its name from the narrow sections where early travellers were forced to dismount and lead their horses by the bridle. Today it's a public road and popular 4WD route, but it's also ridden by cyclists looking for a memorable gravel and adventure ride through a beautiful part of country NSW. Expect an adventurous mix of unsealed road, sustained climbing, steep sections and narrow stretches as the route winds through the hills and alongside the Macquarie River. It's not a manicured gravel trail, and conditions can vary, which is all part of the appeal for riders looking for something a little more adventurous. There are 13 campsites along the full length of the Bridle Track, creating plenty of opportunities to turn the journey into an overnight bikepacking trip. Riverside camping, fishing and swimming spots make it worth allowing some extra time rather than simply racing from one end to the other. Finishing in Hill End adds another dimension to the adventure. Once one of NSW's great gold-rush towns, its historic streets, heritage buildings and surrounding landscapes make it a brilliant destination to reach by bike — and a good excuse to stop, refuel and explore before deciding what's next. RTS Tip: The Bridle Track is shared with 4WDs and other users, so take particular care on narrow sections and blind corners. Mobile reception can be patchy and conditions can change following rain, so come prepared, carry navigation and supplies, and check current road conditions, weather, fire restrictions and local alerts before heading out.
