About this ride

Bright and Victoria's High Country is one of Australia's standout gravel destinations, with an enormous network of forest roads, alpine tracks, quiet country lanes and gravel routes winding through mountains, farmland and valleys. From Bright, riders can head straight into the surrounding hills or use nearby towns including Porepunkah, Myrtleford, Harrietville and Mount Beauty as starting points for completely different gravel adventures. Routes range from shorter valley rides and approachable out-and-backs through to big mountain loops with serious climbing and long stretches through remote alpine country. For those chasing elevation, the surrounding ranges certainly deliver. The Mount Porepunkah Loop climbs towards the 1,178m summit, rewarding the effort with huge views across Mount Buffalo, Mount Feathertop, Mount Bogong and the surrounding High Country before dropping back towards the valley. Other routes explore the forests and farmland around Myrtleford, cross between Bright and Mount Beauty or venture higher into the alpine landscape around Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. Part of what makes this region so good for gravel is the sheer variety. You can put together a relaxed few hours exploring the valley or tackle a demanding full-day adventure with plenty of climbing — then roll back into one of the surrounding towns for a well-earned feed and drink. Some routes pass through working plantation forests, where access conditions and temporary closures can apply, so always check current information before riding. RTS Tip: There are loads of individual gravel routes throughout Bright & Surrounds, and Ride The State will be working on getting these added as individual Ride Cards over time. Until then, check out the mapping and route link to explore the available rides, choose something that suits your distance and ability, and start planning your High Country gravel adventure.
