Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail
About this ride
The Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail is a developing cycling and walking trail through Queensland's Bundaberg Region, following the corridor of the historic railway that once connected Bundaberg with Gin Gin and the Mount Perry mining district. The long-term vision is for approximately 49km of rail trail between Bundaberg and Gin Gin, taking riders through the region's distinctive sugar cane country, farmland and rolling rural landscapes. For now, the trail is partially open, with separate sections available rather than one continuous Bundaberg-to-Gin Gin ride. At the Gin Gin end, riders can explore approximately 3.4km of sealed rail trail between Gin Gin and Tirroan, with the historic Gin Gin railway precinct adding plenty of railway heritage to the experience. Another shorter section is open around Sharon, east of Gin Gin. Work is continuing to expand the trail, including development of the corridor between Bundaberg and Sharon Gorge, bringing the vision of a much longer regional cycling route another step closer. The relatively flat former railway alignment and sealed sections make the open parts of the trail approachable for recreational cyclists, families and touring riders, while the wider project has the potential to become an important cycling connection between Bundaberg and the surrounding rural communities. For riders searching for cycling in Bundaberg, bike trails around Gin Gin, rail trails in Queensland or family-friendly cycling in the Bundaberg Region, the open sections provide a taste of what's planned for this historic railway corridor. RTS Tip: The full Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail is NOT currently open as one continuous ride. Only use officially opened sections and don't assume the former railway corridor between them is accessible. Ride The State will keep working on adding and updating the individual sections as the rail trail develops. Check the latest trail information and mapping before heading out, particularly as new sections are expected to progressively become available.
