Denmark – Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail
About this ride
The Denmark–Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail is a scenic gravel adventure through Western Australia’s Great Southern, following sections of the historic railway between Denmark and Nornalup. Trails WA lists the route at around 68km one way, passing through tall forest, wetlands, farmland and coastal bushland, with historic railway remnants and four original timber rail bridges adding plenty of character along the way. The trail is rated moderate for mountain biking, with surfaces varying from good-quality compacted sections near Denmark to rougher, sandy and sometimes boggy terrain further west. It’s a beautiful ride for those who enjoy exploration, history and quieter back-country gravel rather than a perfectly groomed rail trail. RTS Tip: Don’t assume the full Denmark-to-Nornalup route is currently continuous. Trails WA notes a 14km section between Parker Road and Bow Bridge is not yet open, so plan your route carefully rather than relying on the rail corridor all the way through. For an easier introduction, the approximately 12km Denmark River mouth to Hay River section has some of the best-quality riding and lovely views around Wilson Inlet.
