About this ride

The Fyansford Rail Trail is a 4.4km sealed shared trail running from North Geelong to Fyansford, following the route once used by cement trains travelling between the Fyansford cement works and the North Geelong railway yards. Today it provides an easy, mostly off-road ride through parkland and urban reserves before finishing above the picturesque Moorabool River valley. The trail begins at Douro Street in North Geelong, near North Geelong Station, and follows the old railway corridor through a series of parks and reserves. The surface is asphalt throughout, although sections are older and can be a little bumpy from tree roots, so it’s better suited to hybrid, touring, gravel and recreational bikes than narrow-tyred road bikes. Fyansford’s railway history dates back to 1918, when the broad-gauge line opened to transport cement from the Australian Portland Cement works to the main railway network. While much of the former industrial infrastructure has disappeared, the old railway alignment remains an interesting reminder of Geelong’s industrial past. The trail is also a handy building block for a much bigger Geelong ride. From Fyansford, riders can connect with the Barwon River Trail and continue towards central Geelong, South Geelong and eventually the Bellarine Rail Trail, opening up plenty of options for extending the adventure. RTS Tip: At only 4.4km one way, Fyansford is an easy standalone ride or approximately 9km out-and-back, but its real strength is its connectivity. Link it with the Barwon River Trail for a longer ride, or keep going to connect with the Bellarine Rail Trail. Don’t miss the views across the Moorabool River valley at the Fyansford end.
