Geelong West Velodrome
About this ride
Geelong West Velodrome is a classic outdoor cycling track at Western Oval in North Geelong, providing a dedicated venue for track cycling, training and racing. The velodrome sits around the outside of the sporting oval at 66–76 Church Street and is home to the Geelong Cycling Club. The track is approximately 454m long, with an asphalt surface and moderately banked corners of around 15–20 degrees. Its longer outdoor layout creates a very different experience from the steep 250m timber tracks found in modern indoor velodromes. The velodrome remains an active part of Geelong’s cycling scene, with the Geelong Cycling Club holding track racing, sprint and endurance sessions at the venue. New riders are also welcomed at organised sessions, with the club offering track bikes for riders who don’t have their own. Outside organised club activities, the track is also used recreationally, making it a handy cycling facility for riders wanting to experience outdoor track riding while exploring Geelong. RTS Tip: With a lap of around 454m, you’ll tick over a kilometre in just over two laps. This is an active cycling and sporting facility, so check for Geelong Cycling Club racing or training before heading out. If you’ve never tried track cycling, the club’s beginner-friendly sessions are a great way to give it a go — they even have track bikes available for new riders.
