Gippsland Plains Rail Trail
About this ride
The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail stretches around 63km from Traralgon to Stratford, crossing the wide-open farming country of Central Gippsland with brilliant views towards the Great Dividing Range. Following the former railway corridor, the mostly gravel trail passes through Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Heyfield, Tinamba and Maffra, linking small towns, cafés and historic railway sites along the way. With only around 50m of overall elevation, it’s an approachable ride for families, recreational riders and gravel tourers, while river crossings including the impressive bridges over the Latrobe and Thomson Rivers add plenty of interest. Ride a short town-to-town section or tackle the full trail for a brilliant day exploring country Victoria. RTS Tip: With V/Line stations at both Traralgon and Stratford, this is a great trail to ride one way and catch the train back rather than doubling your distance. If 63km is too much, break it into sections and use towns such as Heyfield or Maffra as your turnaround or refuelling point. The trail is predominantly smooth gravel, so a gravel, hybrid or mountain bike is ideal.
