About this ride

The Goods Line Rail Trail – Sydney The Goods Line is a short urban rail trail and shared cycling path through Ultimo in central Sydney, transforming a former freight railway corridor into a leafy linear park connecting Central Station and Railway Square with Darling Harbour. At around 1km long, this isn’t a destination for riders chasing big kilometres, but it is a fantastic piece of Sydney’s cycling network and an interesting way to travel through the city away from busy streets. The sealed shared path passes UTS, Sydney TAFE, the ABC and the Powerhouse precinct, with multiple access points along the route. The corridor has a fascinating railway history dating back to 1855, when the line carried freight between Sydney Yard and the busy wharves at Darling Harbour. Today, remnants of that past remain throughout the GreenWay-style park, including railway infrastructure and the heritage bridge over Ultimo Road. Rather than simply creating a cycleway, the old railway has been transformed into a public space with gardens, lawns, seating, exercise areas and recreational spaces, making it as much somewhere to explore as somewhere to ride. Its location makes it particularly useful as part of a bigger Sydney CBD cycling route, providing connections towards Darling Harbour, Pyrmont and surrounding inner-city cycling infrastructure. Central Station is right beside the southern end, making it exceptionally easy to reach by public transport. For riders searching for Sydney rail trails, The Goods Line cycling, bike paths near Central Station, cycling in Darling Harbour or family-friendly bike rides in Sydney, this historic corridor is a great little connection to know about. RTS Tip: At only around 1km, The Goods Line is better treated as part of a larger Sydney ride rather than a standalone cycling destination. It’s also a busy shared public space with plenty of pedestrians, so take it slowly and enjoy the railway history along the way. Rail Trails Australia actually notes that while it can be ridden, its short length and many features make it particularly suited to exploring at a relaxed pace.
