About this ride

The Great Southern Rail Trail is one of Victoria’s great multi-day cycling adventures, stretching around 130km through South Gippsland from Nyora to Yarram, with additional branches to Port Welshpool and Port Albert. Following the former South Gippsland railway, the gentle multi-use trail links 14 towns including Loch, Korumburra, Leongatha, Koonwarra, Meeniyan, Fish Creek, Foster and Toora. Expect predominantly smooth compacted gravel, historic railway bridges and cuttings, rolling green farmland, temperate forest and spectacular views towards Wilson’s Promontory and Corner Inlet. With cafés, accommodation and country towns dotted along the route, you can tackle a short section, plan an overnight adventure or load up the bike and explore the entire trail over several days. RTS Tip: Don’t rush this one — the towns are a huge part of the Great Southern Rail Trail experience. Fish Creek, Meeniyan, Foster and Loch all make great places to stop, refuel or stay overnight. For an easier family ride, try the 8.2km Koonwarra to Meeniyan or 10.2km Foster to Toora sections. If you’re going long, pack layers, water, basic bike spares and offline navigation as mobile coverage can disappear in some sections.
