H.A. Smith Reserve Velodrome
About this ride
The H.A. Smith Reserve Velodrome, also known as the Hawthorn Velodrome, is an outdoor cycling track in Hawthorn in Melbourne’s inner east. Sitting within the Gardiners Creek recreation precinct near H.A. Smith Reserve and Patterson Reserve, it provides riders with an accessible place for track-style riding, training, fitness and recreational laps. The City of Boroondara identifies the velodrome as part of the wider Gardiners Creek precinct alongside H.A. Smith Reserve, Hawthorn Skate Park and Patterson Reserve. Hawthorn Velodrome Patterson Reserve The outdoor track offers a very different experience from a steep indoor competition velodrome, making it a handy option for riders wanting to practise holding a line, build speed or simply clock up some uninterrupted laps. Its location also makes it easy to incorporate into a longer ride using the extensive shared-path network around Gardiners Creek and Melbourne’s inner east. The surrounding precinct has plenty of other recreation facilities, and there’s even a self-service bike repair station at nearby H.A. Smith Reserve, equipped with a pump and basic tools for minor repairs. RTS Tip: This is a great one to add into a longer Melbourne cycling adventure rather than treating it purely as a destination ride. Spin a few laps of the velodrome, then use the surrounding shared paths to keep exploring. As with any cycling track, be aware of other riders already using the circuit, hold a predictable line and check for organised activities before jumping on.
