About this ride

Hurstville Velodrome, located within Hurstville Oval at 30 Dora Street, Hurstville, is a historic outdoor cycling track in Sydney’s southern suburbs and the home track of St George Cycling Club. The flat 400-metre track provides a traffic-free environment for cycling, training and racing and is regularly used by recreational cyclists as well as organised club riders. Its flatter design makes Hurstville quite different from the steep banking associated with many competition velodromes. Hurstville has a particularly impressive place in Australian track cycling history. St George Cycling Club traces its roots to the Hurstville Bicycle Club before being established under its current name in 1920, and Hurstville Oval has since hosted Australian National Championships on two occasions. Most famously, the track was used by Edgar “Dunc” Gray while preparing for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he became Australia’s first Olympic cycling gold medallist. The club has since produced an extraordinary list of elite cyclists, including Olympic champions Kevin Nichols, Graham Brown and Stephen Wooldridge. The velodrome remains an active part of Sydney’s cycling scene today, with St George Cycling Club continuing to use Hurstville Oval for training and racing. Georges River Council also includes the velodrome within its recreational cycling network. Whether you're searching for Hurstville Velodrome, track cycling in Sydney, St George Cycling Club, cycling tracks in southern Sydney or historic velodromes in NSW, this is a great piece of Australian cycling history to have on the ride list. RTS Tip: Hurstville’s relatively flat 400m track makes it a little different from a traditional steep-banked velodrome, but organised training and racing still take place. Check current St George Cycling Club activities before heading out and be mindful of faster riders using the track.
