About this ride

The Jarrahdale Balmoral Rail Trail is an approximately 11–12 km one-way cycling trail near Jarrahdale, around 50 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. Following the alignment of a historic timber tramway, the trail winds through jarrah bushland and farmland between the Jarrahdale area and the Balmoral Prisoner of War Camp, combining easy cross-country riding with a fascinating look at the region’s timber and railway history. Riders can spot remnants of old railway sleepers, a former log-loading ramp and distinctive numbered “shield trees” once used by foresters as reference markers during the 1920s. The riding surface is predominantly coarse gravel and compacted earth, making the trail particularly suitable for mountain bikes and capable gravel bikes. Parts of the route overlap with the famous Munda Biddi Trail, while connections at either end provide opportunities to explore the Mundlimup Timber Trails, POW Camp Trail and surrounding Jarrahdale trail network. Interpretive signage around the Balmoral POW Camp explains the history of the site and the ruins that remain, making this as much a heritage ride as a cycling adventure. RTS Tip: Cyclists should follow the Munda Biddi Trail cycling alignment where the original rail formation crosses private farmland rather than following the walking route across the property. Signage can also be limited at a few points, so download the route before setting off. If you have extra time, Jarrahdale has several other heritage and cycling trails nearby, making it easy to turn the Balmoral Rail Trail into part of a bigger day exploring the area.
