Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail
About this ride
The Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail is a scenic cycling and walking route through the Perth Hills in Western Australia, following the former Upper Darling Range Railway between Gooseberry Hill, Kalamunda, Walliston, Carmel and Pickering Brook. Around 25 km south-east of Perth, the trail follows the historic railway corridor through jarrah and marri bushland, combining local railway heritage with an enjoyable off-road ride. The broader route is approximately 16 km, with surfaces ranging from compacted earth and fine gravel to rougher sections with loose stones, rocks and tree roots. Cycling varies from easy to medium, with flatter sections around Kalamunda and more involved riding further south towards Walliston and Pickering Brook. Riders pass historic railway sites including Kalamunda Station, South Kalamunda Siding, Walliston Station and Green's Landing, while sections of the route use dedicated cycling trails and others are shared with walkers. It’s a great choice for mountain bikes, hybrids and capable gravel bikes, particularly for riders wanting to combine Perth Hills cycling, railway history and bushland scenery in one ride. RTS Tip: Keep an eye out for the Donkey Orchid trail markers and pay attention to signage, as the cycling alignment changes between two-way, one-way and shared sections along the route. Slow down when sharing the trail with walkers, and stick to marked tracks to help prevent the spread of Phytophthora dieback. For a longer Perth Hills adventure, the Kalamunda area also provides access to an extensive network of mountain bike and cycling trails.
