About this ride

Latrobe Recreation Ground in Latrobe, North West Tasmania, is a historic sporting venue featuring an outdoor cycling track that circles the main oval. The ground has a long connection with Tasmanian track cycling and was traditionally home to the Latrobe Bicycle Race Club and the famous Latrobe Boxing Day Carnival, part of Tasmania’s Christmas Carnival series. For more than a century, the carnival brought cycling, athletics and woodchopping together at the venue, making Latrobe an important part of Tasmania’s cycling history. The cycling track surrounds the entire recreation oval, giving the venue a distinctive old-school Australian track-racing character rather than the steep banking of a modern purpose-built velodrome. While it remains an interesting stop for riders exploring Latrobe, Devonport and Tasmania’s North West Coast, its greatest significance is its heritage and connection with generations of Tasmanian competitive cyclists. Latrobe is also close to the Wild Mersey Mountain Bike Trails, making it easy to combine a visit with some of the region’s extensive MTB riding. RTS Tip: This is one for the cycling-history fans. The track was the setting for generations of racing and the legendary Latrobe Carnival, but it should not be treated like an unrestricted public cycle path. Check current access and scheduled sporting use before planning to ride on the track, particularly when football, cricket or other activities are taking place at the recreation ground.
