About this ride

The Manjimup to Deanmill Heritage Trail is an easy 5.5–6 km rail trail in Western Australia’s Southern Forests, connecting the regional town of Manjimup with the historic timber settlement of Deanmill. Around 290 km south of Perth, the trail follows the alignment of the former Deanmill timber tramway, travelling through enclosed native forest before opening out to farmland and rural scenery. The first kilometre is sealed, with the remainder predominantly compacted fine gravel, making it suitable for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids and touring bikes. Its relatively flat former railway gradient also makes it a great option for families and recreational riders, with a return journey of around 11–12 km. The trail has a strong connection to Manjimup’s timber and railway history. The original tramway was constructed in 1912 to connect the Deanmill sawmill with the main railway at Manjimup, carrying timber sleepers produced for construction of the Trans-Australian Railway. The tramway closed in 1966 and the former corridor has since regenerated into an important green corridor. At Deanmill, riders can explore the small historic timber settlement with its original mill cottages, workers club and sporting oval. The Deanmill Heritage Trail also forms part of the 1,000 km Munda Biddi Trail between Mundaring and Albany, making it much more than a standalone rail trail. At its Manjimup end it connects with the Manjimup Linear Path, while riders looking for a bigger adventure can continue along the Munda Biddi through the forests of South West WA. Spring is an especially rewarding time to ride, with wildflowers appearing along the trail. RTS Tip: For an easy local ride, pedal from Manjimup to Deanmill and return for around 11–12 km. If you want more distance, connect with the Manjimup Linear Path or follow the Munda Biddi Trail beyond Deanmill to turn it into a bigger Southern Forests cycling adventure. The surface changes from sealed path to gravel, so wider tyres will make the ride more comfortable, particularly after wet weather.
