Megalong Valley

Megalong Valley is one of the Blue Mountains classic epics. Starting from Blackheath Railway Station, it’s an out and back ride of roughly 33 km on sealed road with 600+ metres of climbing. The descent into the valley is sweeping and scenic, the climb back out is a proper challenge. Escarpment views as you ride through the valley, with towering sandstone cliffs looking back toward Meadlow Bath and beyond. Coachwood forest sections offering cool, shaded riding on the climb out. Highlights Old Ford Reserve, a popular riverside campground on the Cox's river. Six Foot Track crossing, where the historic walking trail intersects Megalong Road. There are Cafés & Winery options In Megalong Valley and in Blackheath excellent pre and post ride food options within a short roll of the station. Extensions If you’re happy to leave the tarmac: Dumphreys Campground — Quiet gravel extension deeper into the valley. Foggy Knob — A short, steep gravel climb with big views at the top. Additional backroad loops are possible on gravel or MTB, linking fire trails and rural lanes. Road Bike Considerations On a road bike, there’s no safe or practical way to avoid the Great Western Highway when approaching Blackheath. The simplest and safest plan is to start and finish at Blackheath Station, rolling straight down Megalong Road from there. On a gravel or mountain bike you can ride shared paths and back roads from Katoomba to Blackheath
