Mike Turtur Bikeway railside trail

The Mike Turtur Bikeway is a popular 9 km sealed cycling route connecting the edge of Adelaide’s CBD with the beachside suburb of Glenelg. Following the Glenelg tram corridor, the bikeway provides a mostly separated and relatively flat ride through Adelaide’s inner suburbs, making it equally useful for commuters and riders looking for an easy way to pedal from the city to the coast. Starting at South Terrace and Peacock Road beside the Adelaide Parklands, the route follows the tram line through Goodwood, Glandore and Plympton before finishing at Brighton Road in Glenelg, just a short distance from Jetty Road and the beach. Most busy road crossings are controlled by traffic lights or overpasses, although riders should remain aware of pedestrians, tram crossings and several road intersections along the way. The bikeway is asphalt and concrete throughout and is suitable for recreational riders, families, touring and hybrid bikes and mountain bikes. It also connects with several other Adelaide cycling routes, including the Adelaide Parklands Trail, Sturt River Linear Park Trail, Coast Park Path and Westside Bikeway, making it easy to incorporate into a much longer loop or day of exploring by bike. The route follows a railway corridor dating back to 1873, which was later converted for electric tram operation. The bikeway itself opened in 2010 and is named after South Australian cycling identity Mike Turtur, Olympic and Commonwealth Games cyclist and long-time race director of the Tour Down Under.
