Mt Donna Buang is Melbourne’s closest true alpine-style climb: 16.8 km at about 6.4% gaining roughly 1,069 m from the Warburton Highway turn-off onto Donna Buang Road up to the summit lookout tower. The first half to Cement Creek is the steeper grind; after the hairpin the road eases before a final kick to the car park. Traffic is usually light and the mountain ash forest is superb — pack a jacket for the long, shaded descent, and check winter road conditions as snow can close the upper section.
