About this ride

Narrow Neck Fire Trail – Blue Mountains MTB Ride The Narrow Neck Fire Trail is one of the Blue Mountains' classic mountain bike adventures, following a spectacular elevated plateau from near Katoomba deep into Blue Mountains National Park. The official route is approximately 19km return, travelling from the locked gate on Narrow Neck to Clear Hill and back. Don't let the relatively short distance fool you — the undulating terrain includes some steep climbs and descents, making this a solid ride despite its manageable length. The scenery is the real hero. Narrow Neck forms a long peninsula between the Jamison and Megalong Valleys, giving riders incredible views from both sides as the fire trail passes through open forest, heath and swamp landscapes. Further along, the terrain opens up with expansive views towards Lake Burragorang and the surrounding Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Under the tyres, expect a proper Blue Mountains fire trail experience with a mixture of rocky, gravel, sandy and clay surfaces, along with water bars and changing conditions. It's not technical singletrack, but the steep pinches, loose surfaces and climbing make it best suited to riders with reasonable fitness and some off-road experience. Riders can also turn Narrow Neck into a bigger Katoomba cycling adventure by starting from town. Katoomba Station is around 5km from the trailhead, adding extra distance and making it possible to combine the ride with some of the famous lookouts around Cliff Drive. For anyone looking for mountain biking in the Blue Mountains, Narrow Neck is a brilliant combination of achievable distance, proper backcountry riding and some seriously impressive scenery. RTS Tip: Narrow Neck heads into exposed and relatively remote country, so carry plenty of water, food, repair equipment and navigation. Mobile reception can be unreliable and Blue Mountains weather can change quickly. The trail is also shared with walkers, who have right of way. Check current NSW National Parks alerts and trail conditions before heading out, particularly after heavy rain.
