About this ride

The Outer Harbor Greenway Railside Trail is a 23 km cycling and shared-use route from the Adelaide Parklands to Outer Harbor, providing a valuable bike connection between central Adelaide, Bowden, Woodville, Port Adelaide, Semaphore and the Lefevre Peninsula. The route generally follows Adelaide’s operational Outer Harbor railway line, combining sealed shared paths with quiet suburban streets and short on-road sections. Its predominantly flat terrain makes it suitable for road bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids, e-bikes, families and recreational cyclists. From the Adelaide Parklands, riders follow the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri before heading through Bonython Park and alongside the railway through Bowden, Brompton and West Croydon towards Woodville Station. This first section is around 8 km and includes a combination of separated paths, quiet streets and grade-separated crossings of several major roads. From Woodville, the Greenway continues another 6 km towards the historic Port Adelaide precinct, passing through suburban streets and shared paths before entering the former Port Dock railway yards. This is a great section for riders interested in Adelaide’s transport history, passing close to the South Australian Aviation Museum, National Railway Museum and South Australian Maritime Museum before reaching the Port River waterfront. The final 9.5 km from Port Adelaide to Outer Harbor crosses the Port River via the historic Birkenhead Bridge, then follows the railway corridor north through the Lefevre Peninsula. The trail finishes near Lady Ruthven Reserve and the Outer Harbor Lookout, where riders can connect directly with the coastal cycling network. One of the best things about the Outer Harbor Greenway is its connections. At Woodville, riders can branch onto the Grange Greenway towards the coast, while around Semaphore and Outer Harbor there are connections with the Semaphore Rail Trail and Coast Park Path. The Coast Park connection opens up the possibility of continuing south along Adelaide’s coastline towards Grange, Henley Beach, Glenelg and beyond. RTS Tip: The Outer Harbor Greenway is ideal for a one-way ride using Adelaide’s train network. Ride the 23 km from Adelaide towards Outer Harbor, explore Port Adelaide and Semaphore along the way, then catch an Outer Harbor Line train back rather than retracing the entire route. It isn’t completely separated from traffic, so take care through the quiet-street sections and at road crossings. For a bigger adventure, continue from Outer Harbor onto the Coast Park Path and turn it into a much longer Adelaide coastal ride.
