Penfield railside trail

The Penfield Railside Trail is an easy, mostly flat 7 km shared trail running from Salisbury to Edinburgh North, around 20 km north of Adelaide CBD. Following sections of the former Penfield railway corridor, the trail combines relaxed riding with an interesting glimpse into South Australia’s wartime and industrial history. The original Penfield branch line opened in 1941 to service the major munitions factories and defence facilities operating around Edinburgh during World War II. Today, riders can still spot remnants of the old railway infrastructure, including sections of the former corridor, ballast, culverts, warehouses and the remains of Penfield 3 Station. The route also passes alongside RAAF Base Edinburgh and through Adelaide’s northern defence and industrial precincts. The trail is predominantly sealed asphalt and shared path, making it suitable for recreational riders, families, commuters, touring bikes and mountain bikes. It begins near Salisbury Railway Station, providing convenient train access, and can also be linked with surrounding cycling routes for a longer ride through Adelaide’s northern suburbs. There are no shops, cafés or facilities directly along the trail, and signage is limited, so riders should be prepared to self-navigate. For those interested in railway or military history, nearby attractions include the Penfield Park miniature railway and National Military Vehicle Museum.
