Rail Trail & Tabletop Road

This rewarding gravel loop combines the Great Victorian Rail Trail, quiet country roads and scenic High Country climbs, making it a fantastic ride for those looking to explore the rural landscapes surrounding Mansfield. Leave town via the Great Victorian Rail Trail before turning onto Pikes Road, where rolling gravel roads wind through picturesque farming country. After wet weather, some sections can become muddy, so take extra care. A short stretch along the Midland Highway leads to Long Lane, a peaceful gravel road that eventually reconnects with the Mansfield–Whitfield Road. Shortly after crossing Bridge Creek, the route climbs steadily up Tabletop Road, featuring a mix of smooth gravel, a few steeper pinches and rewarding views before returning to sealed road near the summit. From there, follow Old Tolmie Road, taking care on the fast descent, particularly around the tighter corners. Continue onto the gravel as the route skirts around Tolmie, offering quiet, undulating riding through classic High Country scenery. The final section follows the Whitfield Road, delivering an enjoyable descent back into Mansfield to complete a varied gravel ride featuring rail trail, country lanes, forest roads and sweeping alpine views.
