Rokeby – Neerim Rail Trail

The Rokeby to Neerim Rail Trail is a beautiful shared cycling, walking and horse-riding trail through West Gippsland, Victoria, running from Rokeby through Crossover and Neerim South to Neerim. The broader upgraded route is now around 17 km, combining genuine former railway formation with railside shared path. Riders travel through lush native forest, fern-filled gullies, rolling farmland and classic Gippsland countryside, with views towards Tarago Reservoir, Mt Baw Baw and the Great Dividing Range. The first section from Rokeby to Crossover follows part of the former Warragul–Noojee railway line and is arguably the most atmospheric part of the ride. The trail winds through the Rokeby Flora and Fauna Reserve and Crossover Regional Park, where towering trees, tree ferns and shady gullies create a wonderfully green riding environment. Wildlife can include wallabies, wombats, echidnas and lyrebirds. At Crossover, riders encounter one of the route’s highlights — the historic Crossover trestle bridge, a reminder of the railway that once carried trains through this challenging landscape. Beyond Crossover, the modern trail largely leaves the original railway alignment and continues towards Neerim South through rolling farmland. Because this section no longer follows the gentle railway grade, expect a little more climbing than you might normally associate with a rail trail. Neerim South makes an excellent stop, with cafés, shops, toilets and drinking water available close to the route. From town, riders can continue north for around 5 km towards Apex Lookout, where there are impressive views across Tarago Reservoir and the surrounding ranges. The trail received a significant $4 million upgrade completed in 2025, improving surfaces, drainage, signage, parking and trailhead facilities between Rokeby and Neerim. The upgraded route now includes a mixture of gravel, concrete and sealed sections, making it suitable for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids and capable e-bikes. Plans also exist to eventually extend the route farther north towards Noojee and its famous trestle bridge. RTS Tip: For a shorter ride, Rokeby to Crossover is a great choice if you want forest, railway history and the trestle bridge without tackling the whole route. For the full experience, continue through Neerim South to Apex Lookout and enjoy the views over Tarago Reservoir. Don’t assume it will be completely flat just because it’s called a rail trail — much of the route beyond Crossover leaves the original railway formation and has more noticeable gradients. For MTB riders, nearby Crossover MTB Park offers around 22 km of additional trails if you want to turn the trip into a bigger riding day.
