About this ride

The Rokeby to Neerim Railside Trail is a scenic shared trail through the rolling green countryside of West Gippsland, connecting Rokeby with Crossover and Neerim South. The wider route is around 12.6km one way and combines sections of the former Warragul–Noojee railway alignment with newer railside and shared-path connections. Starting at Rokeby Common, the first section heads through lush native forest and the Rokeby Flora and Fauna Reserve towards Crossover Regional Park. This section follows the old railway corridor and has a wonderfully secluded feel, with tall gums, tree ferns and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. At Crossover, riders can see remnants of the historic railway, including the Crossover trestle bridge, before continuing towards Neerim South. Beyond Crossover the trail moves away from the original railway formation for much of the journey, so expect more climbing and undulating terrain than you might normally associate with a rail trail. The reward is some beautiful riding through open farming country, with expansive views across the surrounding hills. Continue through Neerim South towards Apex Lookout for views towards the Tarago Reservoir and surrounding countryside. The trail has also received significant recent improvements, including upgraded surfaces, trail hubs and signage, making it a much better all-weather route than it was historically. Baw Baw Shire currently provides an official map covering the Rokeby to Neerim Trail and Rokeby Flora and Fauna Trail. RTS Tip: Don’t expect railway gradients for the entire ride. The section beyond Crossover towards Neerim deviates significantly from the original railway corridor and includes more climbing. If you're riding out-and-back from Rokeby, remember that the gradual climbing on the way towards Neerim means you’ll get to enjoy considerably more descending on the return journey.
