Rosehill to Carlingford rail trail
About this ride
The Rosehill to Carlingford Rail Trail is a high-quality 5km shared cycling path through Western Sydney, following the corridor of the former Carlingford railway line between Rosehill and Carlingford. Today, the path runs alongside the Parramatta Light Rail, combining railway heritage with one of the area’s newest cycling connections. The trail is fully paved with a wide concrete surface, making it suitable for road bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes, e-bikes, families and recreational riders. From Rosehill, the route gradually climbs towards Carlingford, so riders heading south on the return trip get the easier run back down. Along the way, riders pass through Camellia, Rydalmere, Dundas and Telopea, travelling beside the light rail and crossing two impressive pieces of infrastructure — the bridge over Parramatta River and another over James Ruse Drive. The former Dundas railway station building has also been retained, adding a little railway history to the ride. One of the biggest advantages of this trail is how easily it connects into the wider network. At the Rosehill end, riders can link with paths around the Parramatta River, opening up longer rides towards Parramatta Park, Sydney Olympic Park and surrounding Western Sydney cycleways. The adjacent L4 Parramatta Light Rail also makes the trail particularly accessible. Water fountains are available at light rail stops along the route, and the L4 trams have bicycle racks, giving riders another option for combining cycling and public transport. Ride the full trail one way for around 5km, make it an easy 10km return trip, or use it as part of a much bigger Parramatta and Western Sydney cycling adventure. For riders searching for Carlingford cycling, Rosehill bike trails, Parramatta bike paths, Western Sydney rail trails or family-friendly cycling in Sydney, this is a great little urban route to have on the list. RTS Tip: At only 5km, this one is even better when linked with the Parramatta River cycling network for a longer ride. The trail runs directly alongside the operating light rail, so use designated crossings, watch for trams and cross rails as close to a right angle as possible.
