About this ride

The Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility (SWIBMX) is a world-class BMX racing venue at O'Halloran Hill in Adelaide's southern suburbs, purpose-built to support grassroots participation through to elite, National and international-level BMX competition. Named in honour of South Australian BMX legend Sam Willoughby, the facility provides a shared home for The Cove BMX Club and Happy Valley BMX Club, bringing two of South Australia's long-established BMX communities together at a dedicated high-performance venue. The facility was developed following collaboration between the two clubs, local councils, BMX organisations, riders and the South Australian Government, with the goal of creating a BMX venue capable of supporting local riders while meeting the requirements of major competition. At the centre of the precinct is an impressive BMX race track featuring 5-metre and 8-metre start hills, separate Pro and Challenge straights and a shared final straight. Electronic timing zones across the track support training and performance development, while the different track options allow riders to progress as their skills and experience develop. SWIBMX caters for a broad BMX community, from young riders and people experiencing BMX for the first time through to experienced racers and elite athletes. Coaching, gate sessions and organised racing provide opportunities to develop starts, jumping, cornering, race lines, bike handling and overall race craft. The venue is capable of hosting competition from club and State level through to National and international-standard events, giving South Australian riders access to a high-quality BMX facility without needing to travel interstate. SWIBMX is also closely connected to one of Australia's most significant BMX stories. Sam Willoughby developed as a rider through both Happy Valley and The Cove BMX tracks before becoming a multiple BMX World Champion and Olympic silver medallist. Naming the facility in his honour creates a fitting connection between the grassroots clubs that helped shape his riding and the next generation of South Australian BMX racers. Supporting the track is substantial event infrastructure including clubrooms, scoring and officials' facilities, first-aid areas, spectator viewing areas, space for club and team tents and amenities capable of supporting major BMX events. While The Cove and Happy Valley remain separate clubs with their own memberships and identities, SWIBMX Facility Incorporated manages the shared venue, with representation from both clubs helping oversee its operation, maintenance and future development. Whether you're discovering BMX, developing your gate starts and bike skills, progressing through club racing or pursuing elite competition, the Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility provides one of South Australia's premier environments for BMX racing and rider development.
