Silverdome

Silverdome, at Prospect in Launceston, Tasmania, is one of Australia’s most significant track-cycling venues. Located within Kate Reed Reserve around 10 minutes south of the Launceston CBD, the multi-purpose indoor arena is home to a distinctive Tasmanian Oak timber velodrome used for community cycling, club racing, elite training and major track events. Opened in March 1985, the Silverdome made history as the Southern Hemisphere’s first indoor timber cycling velodrome. The venue was originally built specifically around cycling and remains one of only a small number of hardwood velodromes in Australia. Since 1997, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport has used the Silverdome as its northern base and the track has played an important role in developing generations of Tasmanian cyclists. The velodrome continues to host track training, club meets and major competitions. The Launceston cycling community regularly uses the facility, and the Silverdome is also part of Tasmania’s famous summer track-racing tradition. The 2026 TasCarnivals calendar, for example, includes a Launceston round at the Silverdome on 28 December. The Silverdome is much more than a velodrome, with the central arena also used for basketball, netball, futsal, indoor hockey, concerts and exhibitions. The venue can accommodate up to 5,000 people, with free parking for up to 1,000 vehicles. Since May 2025 it has been owned and operated by Stadiums Tasmania. A significant $12 million redevelopment is currently underway in 2026, including refurbishment and modifications to the cycling track alongside new seating, sports flooring, change rooms, function spaces and other venue improvements. Riders should therefore check current access before visiting while construction progresses. RTS Tip: The Silverdome isn’t an open public velodrome where you can simply arrive and ride. Casual track hire is available for eligible Cycling Tasmania members, while club sessions and organised events provide other opportunities to experience the track. Check the current program before heading out, particularly during the 2026 redevelopment. If you’ve brought the MTB as well, Kate Reed Reserve is right beside the Silverdome, making it easy to combine track cycling with some Launceston singletrack.
