Tracker Riley Cycleway Rail Trail – Dubbo The Tracker Riley Cycleway is a fantastic family-friendly cycling route through Dubbo, combining riverside shared paths with a sealed section built alongside part of the former Dubbo–Molong railway corridor. The broader Tracker Riley Cycleway forms a roughly 13–13.6km loop, linking central Dubbo with the Macquarie River, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and historic Dundullimal Homestead. The dedicated rail-trail section is around 3km, running between the Western Plains Zoo area and Dundullimal. It follows part of the disused railway corridor and is fully sealed, making it suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids, touring bikes and recreational riders, as well as walkers, prams and mobility devices. There’s plenty to see despite the relatively short distance. Riders pass old railway infrastructure, including views of a historic trestle and large concrete-and-steel railway bridge, before crossing the Macquarie River through classic river red gum country. Interpretive signs along the route also tell some of the story of the old railway and surrounding region. The ride is named after Alec “Tracker” Riley, a renowned Aboriginal police tracker from Dubbo who became the first Aboriginal tracker in NSW Police to reach the rank of Sergeant. Rather than riding only the rail-trail section, it’s well worth incorporating it into the full Tracker Riley Cycleway. The wider loop follows both sides of the Macquarie River/Wambuul and provides connections to parks, sporting facilities, the CBD and some of Dubbo’s major visitor attractions. For a better ride, use the rail trail as part of the approximately 13km loop around Dubbo and the Macquarie River. If you want more dirt under the tyres, you can also combine a Dubbo visit with nearby Dundullimal or Mugga Hill MTB trails.
